How a quiet island became the party capital: hippies in the 1960s, clubs in old farmhouses from 1973, DJ Alfredo's open-air nights at Amnesia, a 1987 birthday trip that helped spark acid house, noise rules that brought roofs – and 3.7 million tourists in 2025.
Hippies, open-air farmhouse clubs and a 1987 birthday trip made Ibiza the party island.
Facts
- Ibiza opened to international tourism in the late 1950s; hippies and beatniks followed in the 1960s, with communes and parties in the island's hills. Pacha opened in an old farmhouse near Ibiza Town in June 1973 – its founder, Ricardo Urgell, ignored advisers who said the hippies were too small a crowd to cater for.
- Amnesia opened in 1976 in a farmhouse at San Rafael. One of its founders, the philosopher Antonio Escohotado, wanted to call it “The Workshop of Forgetfulness” and left after about eight months because it wasn't making money. Ku opened nearby in 1979 as an open-air club – Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé filmed their “Barcelona” video there in 1987. Renamed Privilege in 1995, it was listed by Guinness as the world's largest nightclub: 10,000 people on 6,500 m².
- DJ Alfredo (Alfredo Fiorito, 1953–2024) had been a music journalist in Argentina, left during the military dictatorship and sold candles and clothes on Ibiza before he first played Amnesia in 1983. On its open-air dancefloor he played until midday, mixing Chicago house with Queen, Kate Bush and Cyndi Lauper – the eclectic style that became known as Balearic. He is often credited as its father.
- In late August 1987 Paul Oakenfold spent his 24th birthday on Ibiza with Danny Rampling, Nicky Holloway and Johnny Walker (their friends Trevor Fung and Ian St Paul were already working there), and they found Amnesia. Back in London their club nights – Shoom, Spectrum, The Trip – helped spark acid house and the 1988 “Second Summer of Love”.
- From around 1990, noise rules put roofs on Ibiza's open-air dancefloors: Ku's owner was made to roof the club to comply with sound restrictions, and clubs like Amnesia were later covered to protect the neighbours' sleep.
- In 2025, 3,727,861 tourists came to Ibiza and Formentera (FRONTUR, IBESTAT/INE): 709,776 in July, 28,937 in December. The club season runs from opening parties in late April to closing parties in mid-October; in 2026, Amnesia's 50th-anniversary closing festival was billed from 5 pm to midday.
