Jersey club in three sounds: a five-kick bounce from Baltimore club, vocals chopped to a single word, and the bed squeak – which Lil Jon says was his studio chair. From Newark around 2000 to the Hot 100 top 10.
Five kicks, a chopped word, a squeaky chair. That's Jersey club.
Facts
- Jersey club grew in Newark, New Jersey, around 2000 out of Baltimore club, with DJ Tameil, Tim Dolla and their Brick Bandits crew among its first names. Tameil coined “Brick City club” in 2002, after Newark's nickname; it became “Jersey club” once producers outside Newark made it too.
- It usually runs at about 130–140 BPM (RA gives 135–145). Its classic kick plays five hits a bar – two quarter notes, two dotted eighths, then an eighth (16th steps 1, 5, 9, 12 and 15) – a pattern producers trace to a Baltimore club record by Tapp.
- Vocals are chopped into single words, yelps and ad-libs and stuttered over the kicks, and many tracks call out a dance: Tim Dolla got tired of calling out the “swing dat” on the mic and made the dance call a track of its own.
- The signature bed squeak is sampled from Trillville's “Some Cut” (2004), produced by Lil Jon – who says his studio chair squeaked on the beat, so he put a mic on it and rocked back and forth. The song's video still opened on a bouncing mattress. DJ Tameil looped the squeak into his mixes.
- TikTok carried the sound into pop: Lil Uzi Vert's Jersey club track “Just Wanna Rock” went viral there before its release and reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 2023. On Splice, Jersey club was Berlin's fastest-growing genre in 2024, with downloads up 452.2 %.
- In 2025 the New Jersey Historical Commission added “BBPSR: Birthplace of the Jersey Club Movement” in Newark – the Branch Brook Park skating rink – to the state's Black Heritage Trail.

Script
3 sounds make Jersey club. One is a chair. It grew in Newark around 2000, out of Baltimore club, usually at 130 to 140 BPM. Number three: the kick. Five a bar: two even, then three quicker. Number two: a vocal, chopped to one word, stuttered over the kicks. And number one: the bed squeak. The classic one's from a 2004 Lil Jon beat. He says it was his chair. DJ Tameil looped it into his mixes. It stuck. Then came TikTok: Lil Uzi Vert's “Just Wanna Rock” made the Hot 100 top 10. Five kicks, a chopped word, a squeaky chair. That's Jersey club.
